Rodney King was detained Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said. Police officials say officers pulled King over Tuesday afternoon on Frederick Street near the Moreno Valley town center. Rodney King is an American best known for his involvement in a police brutality case involving the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on March 3, 1991.
A bystander, George Holliday, videotaped much of the incident from a distance. It was the video tape that shook Los Angeles and the entire nation.
Now, 20 years after the Rodney King beating, KTLA looks back at that fateful night. The nine minutes of grainy video footage he captured of Los Angeles police beating Rodney King helped to spur dramatic reforms in a department that many felt operated with impunity.
