Al-Qaeda founder and leader Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces in Pakistan, President Obama has said. He also said that Osama’s son also killed in the operation while two of his wives have been arrested. Obama said it was "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al-Qaeda".
His death was the result of a U.S. operation launched today in Abbottabad, Pakistan, against a compound where bin Laden was believed to be hiding, according to U.S. The news of Bin Laden’s death has boosted the morale of the US policy makers who had suffered years of humiliation at the hands of Bin Laden on several occasions.
U.S. officials said that after searching in vain for the al Qaeda leader since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001, the Saudi-born extremist was killed in the Pakistani town of Abbotabad and his body recovered.
The U.S. had been monitoring the compound in Abbottabad for months after receiving a tip in August that Bin Laden might be seeking shelter there. He had long been said to be in the mountainous region along the Afghanistan, Pakistan border, hiding in a cave as the U.S. sought to kill him with drone strikes from above.
